Chess Coaching with Sam

portrait-bdn.jpeg

Chess is both a science and an art form, and can be mastered by anyone with an inquisitive mind and the right coaching.

A lifelong chess player currently based in Park Slope, I make the game fun and understandable through a personalized, principle-driven approach to teaching that is appropriate for all ages.

Lessons are provided on a 1-on-1 or small group basis, in-person or online. $45/hour, with a free lesson to start. Geared towards players rated 0-1400 USCF.

My coaching philosophy is to demonstrate opening and endgame basics first and foremost. This foundational knowledge is simple to learn relative to more complex areas of chess strategy, and must be mastered by beginners before they can evolve into an advanced player and beyond.

"Sam has been tutoring me in chess for 8+ years. He’s a very accomplished player, but has an approach to teaching that is accessible for people of all skill levels. His approach is not prescriptive or formulaic — he’s very good at walking you through parallel scenarios and helping you weigh the pros and cons of each. I’d highly recommend him as a tutor for people of all ages and abilities.
